Having gained an MBE for her contribution to cosmetics, internationally acclaimed make up artist Ruby Hammer is a force to be reckoned with. Not only has she worked with the world’s top photographers and designers, Ruby’s diverse roles have also included magazine columnist and brand creator. Ruby’s expertise on achieving healthy, beautiful skin is second to none, making her the perfect new Beauty Ambassador for Udo's Choice.

We speak to Ruby Hammer about the past 25 years of beauty, the importance of balance and her role as our new Beauty Ambassador.

What are the main changes you have witnessed in the beauty industry over the last 25 years?

There have been so many changes, but the main things that I’ve noticed are the rise of dermatological/doctor brands and cosmeceuticals; lightening and brightening products that tackle uneven pigmentation; celebrity-led red carpet looks - be it clothes, make-up, hair or lifestyle; the detox phenomenon; and the high-level awareness of the benefits of organic and natural products and ingredients that benefit health and wellbeing. And let’s not forget technology! Social media, the internet – all of this has changed our beauty industry beyond recognition.

And what has stayed the same?
The one thing that hasn’t changed is people’s constant yearning to make the most of themselves, plus the desire for information and progress. People will always want to look and feel their best.

What is your beauty mantra?

The word ‘balance’ says it all for me. Whether it’s related to health, fitness, make-up or skincare, you have to tailor it to your needs without surrendering or going to extremes. We also have to acknowledge that external influences such as sleep, diet and stress will affect how we look – you can’t just put on a face mask and think you’ll be alright.

What do you find are women’s biggest beauty concerns and what advice do you give for these?

I’m constantly being asked questions like: “How do I find the right foundation?”, “How can I make myself look younger?” and “What’s the best way to do smokey eyes/red lips?” My approach is to glean as much information as possible from the individual about their particular colouring, age, needs and lifestyle and tailor my response to suit their needs.

You received an MBE for your Contribution to the Cosmetics Industry, which is a fantastic achievement both personally and for the beauty industry. How does this reflect on your career and your role in the industry?

Getting my MBE was the pinnacle of my career so far. I’m extremely honoured to have received this accolade, which is an acknowledgment of my contribution to the beauty industry and it motivates me to continue my efforts to push the boundaries in the business.  But to be honest, as a make-up artist it doesn’t really have much bearing on a day-to-day basis.

What roles do health and fitness play in your daily life?

They are both very important, but I should and could do more! My working life makes it difficult to pay more attention to the fitness part. I’m forever battling to find the time to fit in a regular exercise routine. But I have always been active and try to walk wherever and whenever I can and I train when I can. In terms of my health, I always make sure I have regular check-ups with my GP and I make time for complimentary treatments such as massage and bodywork. I’m a great believer in meditation, which again, I try to do as often as I can. I take regular supplements such as Vitamins C and D, probiotics and Udo’s Choice Ultimate Oil Blend.

How did you discover Ultimate Oil Blend and what results did you experience?
Ultimate Oil Blend has been on my radar for a long time and I’ve used it on and off for ages. It always makes my skin feel softer, my nails less brittle, it stabilises my moods and gives me more stamina.

We are excited to have you on board as Udo’s Choice Beauty Ambassador! What does this position mean to you?

Thank you! It means I can share the benefits that I know to be true of Udo’s Choice with a bigger audience who already trust my judgement on a wide range of cosmetic and skincare products.

Your career has included many roles, from make-up artist to brand creator to magazine columnist. What keeps you inspired and moving forward?
Most human beings don’t remain standing on the same spot forever. We’re constantly evolving and moving forward and learning from our experiences. I consider myself to be a creative person that keeps myself open to new ideas and inspirations wherever they come from, be it books, films or people. My work allows me the opportunity to travel and meet people from all walks of life and this keeps me inspired. I have always had a passion for what I do.
